Celebrate 75 Years Of Seabees

March 5, 2017 marks the 75th birthday of the Seabees. The Seabees have a simple motto: “We build, we fight.” To put it plainly, the Seabees are the construction workers of the U.S. Military. Ever since their first action on March 5, 1942, the Navy’s Seabees have been an elite force of construction battalions in every American conflict and humanitarian efforts.

Facts About Seabees

The Seabees are a little-known asset of the Military, so here are some facts to help you celebrate this extremely important part of the U.S. Military’s history.

  • During World War II, more than 325,000 people served with the Seabees. They built on six continents and over 300 islands. Construction included many things for the Seabees. A few examples would be: bridges, warehouses, roads, airstrips, storage units and hospitals.

  • The average World War II Seabees’ age was 37 because the military wanted skill and experience over physical fitness.

  • Immediately after landing during the Korean Conflict, Seabees started construction on vital roads and railways on embankments over the water and were finished within hours.

  • In 1953, the Seabees quickly became known as goodwill ambassadors following their important assistance in Greece after a devastating earthquake hit. The Seabees rebuilt roads, orphanages and public utilities. It didn’t stop there--virtually every natural disaster has been aided by the Seabees, building much-needed infrastructure like schools, health care units, etc.

  • On top of their work in every American conflict, the Seabees are also responsible for building essential military infrastructure. From giant air and naval bases to desert camps, the Seabees have their fingerprints all over U.S. Military history.

Many people don’t know the Seabees exist. Even more people take for granted the important work that they put in on the front lines that allowed the other troops to perform basic tasks. Seabees not only built structure necessary for battle, but they also fought alongside those more commonly noticed and recognized. What better day to show your appreciation toward the Seabees than on their 75th birthday?
