It’s Time To Get Brainy

It’s Time To Get Brainy

Blueberries I’m sure there has been a time when you were at work or doing a project around the house and you couldn’t focus. To fix the problem, maybe you drank some coffee or did a different task. However, did you know that what you eat can affect your memory and focus? Here are seven brain foods that can help:

  1. Blueberries: Many different researchers have found that eating blueberries can improve your memory and learning. A group of researchers from the University of Cincinnati found that older adults that were given blueberry juice over time received a higher score on a memory test than those who did not drink the juice. This study showed that blueberries could be a method to prevent memory decline.

  2. Oily Fish: Fish such as Salmon contains Omega-3s which are fatty acids. Fatty acids help keep your brain running smoothly by helping regulate your neurotransmitters, which helps with your mental focus.
  3. Avocados:  This fruit is loaded with monounsaturated fat which helps with healthy blood flow to the brain. They also contain vitamin K and Folate which is considered a B-vitamin, which helps to lower blood pressure and protect against blood clots.
  4. Broccoli: Most people when they were growing up were somewhat forced to eat broccoli, even if they didn’t like it. Studies are finding that there is something to eating broccoli. Broccoli is rich in vitamin K which helps to strengthen your brain's abilities, and also rich in Choline which helps to improve memory. There is also a chemical called sulforaphane found in broccoli. Research published in The Journal of Neuroscience has found that sulforaphane can help improve the blood-brain barrier which can help the brain heal faster after a brain injury.
  5. Walnuts: Going a little nutty is okay! Walnuts are rich in vitamin E and many different studies have found that having a good intake of vitamin E can help with memory decline.
  6. Dark Chocolate:  There have been many studies that have surfaced that show the benefits of eating dark chocolate. Now before you go running out and buy a bag of chocolate, this is what you need to look for: A lot of chocolate candy is heavily processed and doesn’t have much benefit to your health. When you buy dark chocolate, the darker the better. Try to find minimally processed dark chocolate that has 70 percent cocoa.
  7. Oats: The main fuel for your brain is glucose, which is commonly found in oats and other grains. Whole grain oats break down slowly, helping keep your brain sharp for several hours.
