Vietnam Peace Day History

Vietnam Peace Day History

On Jan. 27, 1973, the United States, South Vietnam, Viet Cong and North Vietnam signed the Paris Peace Accords, effectively ceasing the American involvement in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War is a significant part of America’s history, so to observe Vietnam Peace Day, here is some history on the war:

Causes Of Vietnam War

  • In 1946, communists from northern French Indochina (Vietnam) began fighting France for control of the country.
  • Three years later, in 1949, France officially established the southern half of the country as the State of Vietnam.
  • Beginning in 1951, as Ho Chi Minh became the leader of Dang Lao Dong Vietnam in the north, North Vietnam continues trying to overthrow the government in South Vietnam and reunite the country.

Vietnam War

  • In 1954, South Vietnam was also home to rebels who were sided with the north. North Vietnam helped these rebels fight, and the Vietnam Conflict began.
  • The U.S. ended their involvement in the war in 1973.
  • Two years later, in 1975, South Vietnam surrendered to North Vietnam and the Vietnam Conflict came to a close.
  • Today, Vietnam remains a communist state.

The U.S. And The Vietnam War

  • 58,220 U.S. military members died.
  • 1.3 million fighters on both sides died total in the war.
  • 1 million civilians died in the war.
  • 2,594,000 U.S. military personnel served in South Vietnam.
  • 1,621 U.S. soldiers who were POW/MIA have never been accounted for.
  • 304,000 U.S. military personnel were wounded.
  • 75,000 American Vietnam veterans are severely disabled.

Give Back To Veterans

304,000 Vietnam veterans were wounded and 75,000 are severely disabled. The easiest way to do so is by donating an unwanted vehicle to Vehicles For Veterans.
