Car Donation Can Improve The Lives Of Veterans With Physical Or Mental Needs

Often times, veterans return home from service with a physical or mental issue that will interfere with their daily lives or even cause difficulty transitioning back to civilian life. While physical changes may be visible immediately upon returning home, mental problems sometimes take a while to develop. According to DoSomething.org, 30 percent of soldiers develop mental problems with 3 to 4 months of being home. Your car donation can help to support veterans in your community who may be battling a physical or mental condition.

Inner Wounds Remain

Even though the battle may be over, returning veterans are often battling depression, substance abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), military sexual trauma, or traumatic brain injury (TBI). While physical wounds are sometimes visible to loved ones, inner wounds are not, and they may become a more difficult burden for veterans and their families to overcome.

In Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, PTSD is the most common mental health issue, affecting 11 to 20 percent of veterans. The numbers are closer to 49 percent for veterans who saw combat, according to HelpGuide.org.

PTSD affects both men and women, but PTSD is usually more common in women than in men, affecting 10 out of every 100 women, and 4 out of every 100 men. According to the U.S. Department of Public Affairs, PTSD may also occur after military sexual trauma. Military sexual trauma includes any cases of sexual harassment or sexual assault that occurs during time spent in the military.

Depression, suicide, and substance abuse are other harmful inner wounds that may be present. Thankfully, there are various programs and services available for treatment. The most important step that veterans can take is to look for help, and your car donation can help to fund mental health resources for veterans.

Other Wounds In Veterans

Although many physical wounds may be permanent after battle, it doesn’t have to stop veterans from living life to the fullest. Many veterans find it easier to live with their physical wounds after mental and behavioral wounds have been attended to.

Whether wounds are visible or not, many organizations continue to fight for the needs of veterans, helping them to improve their quality of lives as they transition back into civilian life. When you donate a vehicle to Vehicles For Veterans, your car, truck, boat, motorcycle or other vehicle can help to provide veterans with the services and resources they need to live a fulfilling life after returning from battle.

If a veteran you know is having suicidal thoughts, please call 988 then press 1 or visit the Veterans Crisis Line website.
