Low Cost Summer Vacation Activities For Military Families

Summer is in full swing and if you haven't taken a family vacation yet, it's time to start planning. Military families may struggle to find a time when everyone is free to take a vacation. However, there are thousands of museums, aquariums, theaters, amusement parks and other places that try to make it easier for military families to take a vacation. Check out these activities below, which are all offered for free or at a reduced price for military families during the summer!

Aquariums

Several aquariums around the country offer discounts for military families. The New York Aquarium offers one free general admission ticket and 50 percent off the ticket price for three family members. At Sea World parks, active duty military members can receive a set of four free tickets, limited to one time per year.

Discounts are also available at the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Conn., the Birch Aquarium in San Diego, the Downtown Aquarium in Denver and Houston, the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach and the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

Amusement Parks

Many amusement parks offer a discount for military families such as Six Flags, Kings Island, Cedar Point, Hershey Park and others. Some parks even offer one free admission ticket for active duty military personnel and up to three family members once per year. These include Busch Gardens in Tampa and Williamsburg as well as Sesame Place in Langhorne.

Museums

Museums all around the country have discounts available for military families, with some even offering free admission for active duty families. Some free options include the Southwest Florida Military Museum, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and the USS Midway Museum, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Complex.

Thousands of museums around the country have signed up to be Blue Star Museums, a program that offers free or discounted admission to military families. Search for Blue Star Museums on arts.gov for a complete list.

Theatres

Similar to the network of museums that offer free admission, there are many theatres that offer discounted or free admission for military families. There are more than 160 participating theatres where you can see all types of plays from children's theatre to Shakespeare.

National Park Passes

Did you know that active duty military members can get a free annual pass to the National Parks? All current military members in the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, National Guard and National Guard Reserve qualify. You can receive your free pass by going to a National Park or other Federal land that charges an entrance fee and presenting your military ID.
